Equine Assisted Learning Groups for School Age Kids & Families
What is Equine Assisted Learning? (EAL)
Equine assisted learning is an experiential learning approach which promotes the development of life skills. These life skills can be related to academic achievement and classroom behavior, personal growth and exploration or professional pursuits such as leadership development, team building and executive coaching.
Who facilitates EAL?
Our work is facilitated by professionals who have training and certifications that qualifies them to work safely with horses, have knowledge and skill in experiential learning methods and have been trained in facilitation. This means that we offer safe, life skill directed sessions for all students. Sessions may be co-facilitated by a team of professionals; one who is the equine specialist and one who is the human specialist. Each member of the team has the necessary skills to work with the type of individual or group in the session.
Sessions may also be facilitated by someone who is called duly-qualified. A duly-qualified professional is someone who has both expertise in working with horses but also has additional training in human development and is qualified to work with a specific individual or group. Any duly-qualified professional must have adequate understanding of horse behavior, management and safety as well as an equal understanding of human dynamics and facilitation. This is to ensure that the professional can keep students safe and also create appropriate goals and corresponding activities. Professional facilitators are trained and/or certified and/or advanced certified in one or more of the following models: EAGALA, Natural Lifemanship, Arenas for Change and are governed by the ethical standards and professional competencies and operating guidelines.
What Does an EAL Session Look Like?
EAL sessions can be done on an individual basis or when working with groups. Each session involves horse interaction facilitated by the professional or professional team. Though there is always a lesson plan, a good facilitator will often follow the horse’s lead. Often the activities are problem solving based, relationship building or observation. Though students can learn horsemanship skills through the sessions, it is usually not the primary goal. Most goals are focused on the development of life skills. Lessons are only on-the-ground. No prior horse knowledge is required.

Equine Assisted Learning For Children with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities & Their Families
HORSEPLAY
At Serenity Stables, we believe that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) deserve the same opportunities offered to “typical” children. While children with I/DD face many of the same challenges as their peers, they also experience unique risk factors and sometimes additional physical, emotional and social differences. In response to these differences, Serenity has developed an 8 week rotating series called Horseplay which exposes children to horses and provides a safe place to learn and practice important social skill building.
Serenity provides individualized, supportive services for both children and adults with developmental disabilities and delays. We use a common sense approach that is grounded in a Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) paradigm. Our person-centered approach incorporates the best aspects of a variety of theoretical and learning approaches while emphasizing personal achievement in an appropriate supportive environment. Our therapy horses are gentle, non-judgemental friends who provide opportunities for social and emotional growth and learning. Aside from it just being fun, the benefits of equine assisted learning can provide a foundation for achieving new developmental milestones. No prior horse experience is necessary. All activities are on-the-ground (no riding).
Focus is on the 7 most important social skills:
- Sharing
- Cooperating
- Listening
- Following Directions
- Respecting Personal Space
- Making Eye Contact (greeting others)
- Using Manners
Saturday Mornings. 8 Week Sessions (on-going). Registration online: Serenitystablestlc.com
